The Abbey is believed to date back to 708 and build by Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, with the Benedictines settling in the Abbey in the 10th century. During the Hundred Years War, Mont St Michel was an impregnable stronghold, and as a result an example of military architecture. The Abbey served as prison till 1863 as a result of the dissolution of the religious community during the revolution.
